In the month of November, Cubot launched their newest model. A smartphone which can be considered as a fabulous all-rounder. A phone having a perfect combination of stunning beauty and massive power.

We are talking about Cubot X17, a high tier terminal for an affordable price of just $169.99.This is true because Cubot X17 has a thickness of just 6.1 mm, which is an appreciable achievement for Cubot, especially for that price. But, friends believe us that this is not the only prominent feature of this phone.

There are many other awesome and remarkable features of Cubot X17, which will be later discussed in this review. Model X17 CPU MTK6735 64bit Quad Core, 1.3GHz GPU Mali-T720 RAM 3 GB ROM 16 GB, eMMC 4.5 Display Screen type: Capacitive (5-Points) Screen size: 5.0 inch Screen resolution: 1920 x 1080 (FHD) Pixels Per Inch (PPI): 441 Dimensions 64 x 2.73 x 0.24 inches Weight 163 grams Screen Size 5 Inch, 2.5D screen Connectivity Wireless Connectivity: 4G, 3G, GSM, WiFi, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 WiFi: 802.11b/g/n wireless internet Network type: FDD-LTE+WCDMA+GSM 2G: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz 3G: WCDMA 900/2100MHz 4G: FDD-LTE 800/1800/2100/2600MHz Camera Camera type: Dual cameras (one front one back) Back-camera : 13.0MP (interpolated 16.0MP) Front camera: 5.0MP ( interpolated 8.0MP) Aperture: f/2.2 Flashlight: Yes Camera Functions: Smile Capture, HDR, Face Beauty, Face Detection, Anti Shake Video recording: Yes OS Android 5.1 (Lollipop) Material Zinc metal alloy CNC Additional features HotKnot, Air Gestures, OTA online update, Smart home key, smart power saver mode Battery Battery Capacity (mAh): 2500mAh Built-in Battery Battery Type: Lithium-ion Polymer Battery Battery Voltage: 3.7V Cubot X17 comes inside a simple but beautiful, black colored, rectangular packing.

Cubot is written in golden gloss color on the top right side of the box. This gives a delighting first look to the user. After taking out the phone, a transparent back cover of the phone is found. Then comes another box (attached inside the original box). If we open the box, on the top is the user guide, below it is the SIM slot opener and at the last is the screen protector and cleaner. At the end are two compartments containing the charger and the data cable.

First we are going to discuss about the physical measurement of Cubot X17. The dimension of this phone is 5.64 x 2.73 x 0.24 inches and it weight 163 grams. As the phone is ultra slim (6.1 mm), it should be lightweight. But the given weight is a little more as compare to the thickness.

This gives the user a slightly heavy feeling while holding the phone. Looking at the physical appearance of X17, it looks a bit similar to Iphone (especially the rear camera position) and also to Huawei Mate series (front view). Whole frame of this phone is made of zinc alloy CNC (4.1 mm thick) rather than aluminium alloy or plastic.

Well, question arises that why they have used zinc alloy? This is because zinc alloy has more strength and is wear resistant. Which means that it can easily retain its natural texture even in harsh conditions.

But it is more heavier than Aluminium alloy which increases the weight of the product. The rear of X17 has the CUBOT logo on the upper side, a rear camera with dual tone LED and at the bottom speaker is present.

As previously mentioned that the camera positioning looks similar to iPhone instead of the design (square instead of circle). The speaker is on the lower back which could be a problem.

The problem is that the sound may reduce when the phone is laid on it’s back. But the sound quality coming from this speaker is rich in bass and different amplitudes. On the front view of Cubot X17, you can find the front camera on the top left side, a speaker on the center and an LED notification on the right. Below are the three traditional touch based buttons: menu, home and back. The front is not interesting as it is like the majority of the phones.

But, wait! The only interesting aspect of the front view is the use of 2.5D glass which has made the phone to be nearly borderless. Seriously, the use of 2.5D glass for that price. This further enhances the beauty of Cubot X17.On the right border of the phone is the volume bar and the lock screen button.

They work smoothly, as no ‘tick’ sound is felt or hear while pressing them constantly. Meanwhile the left border has a SIM and TFT card slot, which can be opened through the tool given in the packing. This is really awkward because the port opener will be required everything in order to insert a Sim or the card. However, a lock system should have been introduced.

On the upper frame, 3.5 mm audio jack is present. While on the lower frame, the charging USB port is present, which could make the phone difficult to use while charging. The second prominent aspect of Cubot X17 is the screen and its display.

It’s interesting to know that Cubot have used the same screen which used in iPhone. It is called “JDI screen” with a screen size of 5 inch. The resolution is Full-HD (1920 x 1080) with an amazing pixel density of 441 PPI. By the way this pixel density is the maximum density to be achieved in a Full-HD resolution. Forget about the appearance, and focus on the hardware of X17. Because the heart of X17 is an quad-core, 64-bit processor called MTK6735, having a frequency of 1.3 GHz. Hmm… An octa-core processor could have been a better choice, as these processors are common nowadays and the trend of using a Quad-Core processor has finished.

But using a Quad-Core processor at low frequency makes the phone to be energy efficient. We did a benchmark and the results were quiet interesting:Returning back to the track, the performance is further increased by using 3 GB RAM and a Mali-T720 CPU. Here is a gameplay, to further elaborate the performance of the GPU.Cubot X17 has two camera: Front and Rear. The front camera is just like the camera of other phones.

It is a 5 MP camera (interpolated as 8 MP) with f/2.2 aperture. But a unique feature in it is that it has a super wide lens of 88 degrees. Good! You can add more people in a selfie.

There is also a preinstalled beauty app.Meanwhile the rear camera is composed of 13 MP (interpolated 16 MP), a modified Sony Exmor sensor with dual tone LED flash. Moreover Cubot X17 uses 5 element accurate lens, f/2.2 aperture, CMOS reaches to 1/2.7 inch, this means that even in low light\dark situations the details would be same as in daylight.

We have divided the connectivity aspect into two more categories: Wired Connection and Wireless Connection. First moving to the wired connection.

Cubot x17 can be connected through a PC with the USB cable found in the packing. A USB drive can also be attached to the phone with an OTG cable (sorry but you have to buy it separately).

Also the 3.5 audio jack is also available on the top of the phone in order to connect any audio device. The problem is that the audio jack and micro USB port are not found on the same side. This could make difficult for the user to use the phone while both ports in use.We are going to discuss the most exciting features in the connectivity heading. First and the foremost feature is the HotKnot technology.

So what is HotKnot? The answer is that it is a wireless data transferring way, in which huge data can be transferred in seconds when the phone is touched with another phone having HotKnot.

This means that you don’t have to waste your precious time in data transferring through Bluetooth or Wifi Direct.Cubot X17 also supports Dual SIM (one Nano and one Micro) with Dual Stand-by. But the problem is that if you want to insert a TFT card then you have to remove the Micro SIM in order to use the card. The slot is found on the left side of the phone and can be opened through the opener given in the box. Exciting thing is that the phone also supports 4G-LTE (FDD). Great, now you can experience the downloading speed and uploading speed which is 150 Mbps and 50 Mbps respectively. X17 has a storage capacity of 16 GB eMMC 4.5 with a frequency of 200 MHz. We did some SD card test and reached to an amazing result.

The result was that the writing speed reached to 50 MB/sec and reading speed to 200 MB/sec. Bravo! The phone runs on a modified Android platform version 5.1 (Lollipop). We are hopping that the update to 6.0 (Marshmallow) will be available soon. By saying modified we meant that the OS is much more stable and lighting fast.Air gestures OTA online update (just in one touch) Smart Home key (single press to go to home screen and double press to lock the screen).

Smart power saving mode Remote data deleteWhile doing multi tasking the phone runs smoothly, thanks to the large Ram. We would like to sum up by saying that the OS of X17 is quite simple, easy and fast to use.Cubot X17 is powered with a non-removable, Li-ion battery with a capacity of 2500mAh. Well, looking at the capacity many among you will think that it’s not enough to power a high spec phone like X17. But, aspects like JDI display, Smart power saving mode, low frequency processor are here to save the day. Thus the battery timing of this phone is as follow:Elegant Design Good Performance eMMC 4.5 storage Amazing camera with additions modes Stable OS with many rare features 4G-LTE and HotKnot 5D JDI FHD screen
