Guide to Android Lollipop by Charles Hughes.
First a word about who is writing this review: I just bought my first Android 5.0 Lollipop tablet and have absolutely no previous experience with the an Android device. (I know I live under a rock.) My expectation for this book is that it will teach me the user level ins and outs of Android 5.0 Lollipop. I don't need to be a power user, just to be competent enough to use the device for everyday tasks like web surfing, checking email, and taking an occasional photo.
On to the review. The book is as pictured on the product page. It's an average full size paperback, the pages are thick enough to feel good and the gray-scale printing is very clear.
I read this book cover to cover in about four hours as I followed along with it on my new tablet. While it is over 300 pages long a large portion of the book is used on full size screen captures. Normally I would frown on so much of a book being pictures but in this case the pictures were very helpful.
On this point, the pictures didn't exactly match my tablet. I assume Android has been updated or my tablet manufacturer used custom icons. Either way the pictures were close enough that it was still very easy to figure out what I needed to do. At no point was I left scratching my head or guessing what to do. Everything I expected to be covered was there.
Rather then listing every subject in this review I will say to see the table of contents in the book preview. Each subject is given very clear step by step instructions, many with full size pictures so there is no guesswork as to what you need to do. If you read this book and follow along with your Android device you will be a competent user in one afternoon. The table of contents and index are well done so fast look ups are easy and that makes this a good reference book when you need to refresh your memory on those not often used menus.
So whats not to like? One thing I found odd is the author put wireless setup chapter after web browsing and email chapters. No harm done, each chapter can stand on it's own so if you want you can skip ahead and setup your wireless network before you begin the book. Android apps are not given coverage here, not even the common ones. Neither are common terms used by Android users, so if you want to know what side-loading is you'll have to look that up on your own. And as you would suspect, there is no coverage of more complex actions like rooting nor any discussion of their pros and cons. Overall This book it is a 5-star success and after reading it I learned the basics of my new device in just a few hours. So I would recommend it to anyone completely new to Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Buyers should be aware there are several free online resources that cover Android 5.0 Lollipop very well, but this book is well worth the low cost of $13 so don't hesitate to buy it. Also, I want to add a friend who has an Android 4.4 KitKat tablet says if your are already familiar with any Android product that this book will be too simple for your needs. I do have the version of the operating system identified as lollipop and I might just not understand updates that occurred after book was published. It was helpful in learning many features I was unsure of how to access. Read more I recently purchased a smart phone which used Android Lollipop as its operating system.
Though the manufacturer made available a fairly good Users Guide i purchased this book to get an overview of the Lollipop OS. I felt that the book provided the basic understanding that I needed in order to get started with my new purchase.
