Its paper-like aesthetic keeps the OS consistent with Google's Web apps. Better power management, a more vibrant interface, and increased responsiveness make Lollipop a worthwhile upgrade.ProsIntuitive layout: Android 5.0's new card-style layout makes it intuitive and efficient to switch between apps. Notification ribbons provide alerts without being intrusive. Built on Google's Material Design principles, menus and apps are vibrant, colorful, and paper-like -- similar to Google's Web apps.Multiple users: Android finally allows guest accounts.
Use separate accounts or the pinning feature, which locks your device into a single app, so you can share your phone or tablet without privacy concerns. Each user can customize the look and feel of their experience, as well as install and run separate app environments. Battery life: Lollipop has been optimized to better manage energy, and it provides a history list of the most energy-draining apps. Even older devices like the Nexus 5 will see a bump in battery life.Speed: Apps and processes launch noticeably faster in Lollipop, thanks to the new Android RunTime (ART). This responsiveness is most apparent in system-intensive apps like games and multimedia tools.
Bloatware removal: With Lollipop, you can now remove space-hogging, carrier-specific bundled apps.ConsSpace eater: The new ART environment supports faster processes at the expense of disk space. Be sure to opt for more storage (built-in or expandable) if you're buying a new device.
Rolling updates: Lollipop is currently available only to those running Nexus devices. Motorola, Samsung, and HTC users should expect Android 5.0 by year's end. Everyone else will have to wait till early 2015.Bottom LineLollipop is the biggest Android update in years.
For its enhanced interface and optimized features, we recommend that anyone with Lollipop-capable devices make the upgrade. read more + Publisher's Description + From Google: Android 5.0 "Lollipop" is the latest version of the Android mobile operating system developed by Google.
Android 5.0 features a redesigned user interface built around the new "Material design", a responsive design language, improved notifications, and a better power management system. Internal changes sees Google's mobile OS making a platform switch from Dalvik VM to Android Runtime, code name ART. read more + I just got the update and it SUCKS.
I am sure there's great things done for the software itself, but what pissed me off is that these arrogant designers feel they should be able to change how it LOOKS for the users. Design and application should be separate. Now I've spent about 3 hours of my remaining life trying to get it back to the way I had it. Icons, colors, wall papers, apps and functions I had installed and set up. JERK!!! I design too, and I know enough to leave some things alone.
I HATE apple products but it seems only Apple knows how not to dick with settings and visuals. Of course that's because Android and Microsoft are STILL playing catch-up. I'd like to tell the developers of lollipop who felt they could change ALL my settings and graphics and NOT back it up where to stick that lollipopWho would have ever thought that Goggle would deliver an update that would make Microsoft look good. I have no confidence in my Nexus 7 when it used to be my go to travel device, especially for short trips. The N7 isn't unusable; it;s just unreliable.
Shame on you Google. The most egregious fact is that they've taken so long to issue a patch.
Has Google risen to it's level of incompetence? Are they trying to get us to buy newer Google products? (not likely.
)My tablet does appear to run faster and is certainly more stable. There were several apps in the past which would crash, refuse to work or simply stall (lock up). I have had the upgrade now for at least a couple weeks and can see no downside to performance.
With the notification bar at the top, I was able to clear all notifications with a single button - this no longer seems to be available and all notifications will remain until you either click on each individual one or reboot. Not a serious issue, but an annoyance. My Nexus 7 takes forever to start up and, when it does finally wake up, if I don't do something immediately the screen goes black and I need to start all over. A reboot takes almost 10 minutes.
I never had that problem before even after previous updates. I have all the same apps on my Droid Mini and have actually opened the same app on both devices using the same internet connection. My phone wins every time. My Nexus is not used to store photos, music, etc. It's only used for reading e-mail from the comfort of my favorite chair so it's not a memory issue.
Reply by DrNicket on December 4, 2014 Which Nexus 7 are you using? the 2012 with nVidia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_7_%282012_version%29) or the 2013 with a Snapdragon processor?
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nexus_7_%282013_version%29) Report this post Reply by 1cracktech on December 4, 2014 Why are you Americanos so ignorant?? Here in Asia we have a pletoria of Phones (for now before Tabs- coming soon!) from up and coming unknown brands to the more established Chinese brands that already have Android 5.0 (from 4.7inch to 6 inch)but of course they are filled with chinese bloatwares (thats where we ROM cookers come in and make it AOSP compatible!
)You guys always think that the US is the center of the world, what is available on the Lollipop Ui was already available since last year on such thing as the VIBE 2.0 Ui on certain brands of phones (LENOVO/ASUS/ect) minus the kernel of course!. The Lollipop Ui is slightly inferior to VIBE 2.0 (Vibe Z/X) which is incorporated was already available on these phones.
Report this post Google this OS. There are 100's if not 1000's of unsatisfied customers. I am at the point of getting an iphone. Besides slowing down our phone, after attempting a charge over nite, we got 34%? Phone calls cannot be received.
...the situation is bizarre beyond belief.Horrible upgrade.
It ruined my Nexus 7. Apps crash, 2-3 minutes for web pages to load, Facebook closes after a few minutes, most apps won't open for several minutes. DO NOT UPGRADE TO LOLLIPOP if you have a Nexus 7!!! Google is ignoring the problem.
Do your research. There are thousands of Nexus 7 users that not have a useless tablet.
Updated on Dec 8, 2014 Reply by hockeymatrix on December 3, 2014 This OS has 100's if not 1000's of complaints about it all over the net. It slows down everything, if you can can your device to work at all. If you haven't upgraded yet...DON'T!!! Wait for them to put up a major fix. Report this post Freezes phone applications (I use a Nexus 4). Makes touchscreen unresponsive. Takes a long, long time to detect wifi networks.
Very slow surfing speeds. Slow downloads. Difficult to take phone calls due to unresponsive touchscreen.
Turns on applications by itself.Android 5 made the phone appear to run faster.
smoother. I'll admit that some apps broke.
However, from what I've seen (and experienced) all that is needed is a patch from the developers. I reached out to all the developers of the games on my phone and all of them (except EA) has provided a patch within a reasonable time frame. Some other apps required no patch whatsoever.
Must be that those apps don't make any particular calls that don't exist or are not supported in the new OS. I'm not a coder so I don't know for sure. All I can say is I like the new Android and I'm happy to stick with it.Very nice update to what I thought was a good OS to start with. Further rollout is going to be in the hands of the carriers which are notorious for delaying and withholding OS updates (boo carriers, Google play editions best way to go)
