It feels and looks great and the OS is fully functional.
However the phone does have malware. Scanning with several products (e.g. Malware Bytes and 360 Security) shows three malware issues: Trojan Downloader Agent.EA - this appears to be hidden behind com.android.
os which in essence shows there is something wrong with the operating system Modify IMEI comes back as malware Ant Keyboard application comes back as malware Unfortunately the software I am using is unable to remove these. From reviewing XDA forums and reading into Android development there are two options. Root the phone and remove the offending files physically or flash the OS. Both will invalidate any warranty.
I have contacted the seller in regard to this and they are yet to reply. In the interim I have disabled/forced stopped the relevant applications. It has only been two days but it would be nice to get their thoughts in regard to this and what the next steps are. I will wait a full working week before escalating this further.
Consequently, take caution if purchasing this phone. It is great as a phone but be wary of clicking on inappropriate updates, sharing of information, or using it for browsing, SMS, MMS. The malware highlighted above is an easy route for such information to be lost/shared/used illegally.
Update (21/04/2016): The seller replied asking me to factory reset the phone and reinstall security software. I had initially done this prior to doing anything with the phone but thought I would give it a go. Modify IMEI has now been resolved but the other two issues still exist. I have asked the seller to investigate this and for the meantime have disabled all apps/services that are linked to the issues that still remain.
Colour: Cubot X17 Verified Purchase On receipt of my X17 I ran a scan with the Malwarebytes android app. The scan revealed that the ROM was infected with Trojan.Downloader.
Agent. ea in the operaService. apk. Malwarebytes could not remove this infection, and I believe you would need to root the phone to do so. I returned the phone and received a quick refund without any problem.
Just something to be aware of! Colour: Cubot X17 I've had my Cubot X17 for over a week now and I am very impressed. I initially was looking for a smartphone with a decent amount of storage as my previous smartphone was running out of space with all the constant google updates to android. I decided that a 16gb model would be best and a surveyed all the cheaper smartphones on Amazon.
I noted that the reviews for Cubot were generally very positive and after viewing several YouTube videos I decided to get a Cubot X17. The X17 is basically a X16 with an extra 1gb of ram which should improve performance and metal body rather than the glass-fibre of the X16. I liked the idea of the metal body. I should at this point say that I ordered the phone direct from Cubot on eBay and saved a few pounds. The phone took about 7 days to arrive and came with a UK charger. The phone itself is very sleek and modern and feels very solid in the hand. in use everything is fast with no lag, screen is very sharp.
I am particularly impressed with the WiFi which is decidedly quicker than previous phones, I think it uses the 5g band as well as the 2.4g. The data is great as well and I get 4G reception at home, although I have not run any speed tests on the 4G as I am on PAYG.. Camera seems good although no doubt if I paid 5 times as much for a Galaxy S6 or iPhone the camera would probably be better. I have been trying to think of any bad points to raise- and I am struggling - if I am particularly picky I think I would mention that the phone comes with a protective plastic back cover.
I have left it on to protect the phone. However this plastic has a slightly sharp edge to it which I dislike the feel of.. I thought of taking a bit of sandpaper to it but decided to buy a £3 gel cover for the phone instead.

Great quality case being one piece aluminium, good screen, fast and responsive, never crashed once! Great battery life. Having spent £500 and £600 pounds on iPhone and Samsung Galaxy in the past and not really been wowed, I purchased this dual SIM Cubot to use for work with home and work SIM's in. It performs as well as the Galaxy and is a lot nicer than the overpriced iPhone I own. Or should I say did own, having been so impressed with the Cubot X17 I sold the iPhone and Galaxy S6 on ebay! Signal great on O2 network; quick to respond to what you want it to do; well made; feels solid; great display and camera; reasonable battery life on full charge.
An added bonus would have been the inclusion of a small LED indicator to show when calls have been missed or the arrival of new emails and texts - but all it takes is a quick press of the power button to see the 'status' messages' something that really isn't difficult to do. It's certainly a lot faster than my 3-year old Samsung Galaxy (which I've just traded in for cash), and I can even get the voice dialling to work in 3G coverage areas - which wouldn't work on the Galaxy. The addition of a 32Gb micro SD card gives it plenty of storage - so there's really no limit to the applications that can be installed and used. Multi-tasking is extremely fast also with the switch from app to app being fast. There does not appear to be any lag in my opinion.
Hopefully it will last just as long or longer than my previous phone and keep working well. For the money, it really is hard to fault - unless you need a posher badge! Go ahead, try it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Bought 3 of them for all family. 2 had microphone broken within 5 months.
