With the Elephone Vowney a smartphone in which many users had interest was announced. The phone’s features offered a Helio X10 processor, 4GB RAM, a 21megapixel camera, a 2K display, and therefore it fulfilled people’s expectations. Unfortunately, Elephone stopped the Elephone Vowney’s production quite soon for unknown reasons; only a Lite-version of the Vowney is still available. However, the little brother has quite an offer.

Although the Vowney Lite doesn’t house a 2K screen and 4GB RAM, but only 3GB, the Helio X10 processor with its full LTE support is clearly a unique selling point. The smartphones of Meizu, LeTV and Xiaomi offer comparable good features, but without LTE Band 20. Whether the Vowney Lite is a suitable alternative for users looking for high performance and 4G internet under 300$, you will see in in following review. Turned off the Elephone Vowney seems to be bezel-free. However, this is not really the case: turning the display on, you can see a bezel, which is only 3mm slim. Below the display, there is an oval dot, illuminated with a white LED, which serves as notification LED. Although the button creates the impression that you can use it as home button, you can’t. The Vowney Lite has on-screen-buttons instead, but soft-touch-buttons below the display would have been better.

The Elephone Vowney’s rear consists of a synthetic material with roughened surface. This secures good grip and protects the surface from fingerprints.

The optics and the feeling of the rear leave a good impression as well. With a thickness of 9.5mm and a weight of 156g, the Vowney is pleasantly handy and light, considering the 4000mAh battery inside the phone. On the rear, there are also a fingerprint scanner, a dual-LED flash and the camera, which juts out about 1mm from the rear. The volume control and the power button are on the smartphone’s right side. The Elephone Vowney’s back cover can’t be removed. The two SIM slots are on the left side. Here, either two micro-SIM cards or one micro-SIM and one micro-SD card can be inserted.

For about 240$, the Elephone Vowney offers an elevated performance. The smartphone can compete with a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and an Elephone 9000 considering the computing power, but the processing is of less quality. In contrast to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3’s metal casing the Elephone Vowney is only made of synthetic material.

This is positive in terms of weight, but slightly reduces the premium feeling. All in all the Elephone Vowney’s design and processing are on average. The Vowney Lite provides a Full HD display with a 1920*1080 pixel resolution, having a pixel density of 400ppi.

A sharp image without any discernible single pixels provides a good experience when looking at multimedia. Altogether, the display’s quality is good. The colours are lively and natural. The display’s contrast is satisfactory, although a deeper black would have been desirable.

The brightness ranges in the upper mid-field and is sufficient for using the phone also in brighter ambient light without any problems. It has very nice viewing angles as well. Who wants to adjust the Vowney Lite’s display according to own preferences, can change the fine tunings in the settings menu through Miravision. It is surprising, that when pressing the display hardly, there are some slight colour changes around the finger.

This hints at air between glass and display, which should not be the case having a 200$ smartphone. However, this isn’t a problem in daily usage because you usually don’t press the display that hard. The not completely equally illuminated display is another niggle.

Having a closer look, you can notice that the display’s edges are brighter than the rest. The Elephone Vowney’s touchscreen can register up to 5 points of contact simultaneously. Inputs are put into practice fast and reliably and the Vowney is totally suitable for prolific writers.Considering the display, the Elephone Vowney cuts a good, but not a very good figure.

In contrast to most of the other China smartphones within the same price range the phone doesn’t have a 2.5D glass rounded off at the side. The irregular illumination and the air below the glass show that a better processing would have been possible. Nevertheless, the Elephone Vowney provides good results, as colour representation, brightness and contrast are consistent; the negative points don’t portray a big restriction in daily usage.

Like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2/3 and the Meizu Metal the Elephone Vowney uses the Helio X10 processor by Mediatek. The Taiwanese manufacturer produces the Helio X 10 processor and it offers a great performance due to 8 Cortex A53 cores at 1.9 GHz each. A Power VR G6200 GPU supports the processor.

The Elephone Vowney meets all the requirements, which can be demanded of a smartphone right now. The phone is very fast in daily usage. Apps and web pages open fast and without any waiting time. The operating speed is good for a phone for less than 300$. Thanks to the 3GB main memory, there is enough capacity for multitasking.

For users having many apps on their smartphones, this is perfect. Even graphics-intensive games are not a problem for the phone.

The phone provides 16GB memory for saving files, which can be extended up to 128GB, but only if going without Dual-SIM! The Elephone Vowney’s internal memory is not as fast as its competitors’; here Elephone economized. The Elephone Vowney uses an almost untouched Android 5.1 system. It is not known if an update on Android 6 will follow.

The Google Playstore is preinstalled and all apps and games can be easily downloaded and installed. The menu-driven operation runs smoothly and at no time were there bugs or crashes.

Elephone did a good job on this. Concerning the camera, the Elephone Vowney Lite is perfect for photo enthusiasts. The manufacturer didn’t economize on anything and stakes on a 21 megapixel sensor by Sony. The IMX230 is able to take high-resolution images.

The picture’s sharpness is convincing, the images are rich in detail and lively. The colour representation is good as well. Sometimes I wished it had a warmer colour representation, but this is not a negative point, which would deteriorate the overall great result. In bad lighting conditions, the Elephone Vowney Lite does a good job. The for smartphones common images noise also occurs, but only on a low level.

The Dual-LED flash supports the night shots well. A practical feature is the orange-yellow colour of one of the LEDs to make the human skin appear less pale. The autofocus’ speed is claimed to be 0.15 seconds, a statement that we can confirm. The autofocus works quite fast and precisely.

Video recording is possible at a 4K resolution. The Elephone Vowney offers a fingerprint scanner.

The sensor takes about half a second to unlock the display. Even with the display turned off, the phone can be unlocked by putting the finger on the sensor. However, the scanner has problems in terms of accuracy.

Although the fingerprint scanner should be able to read the fingerprint in all angles, the error rate is around at least 30%. In contrast to other smartphones likes the Meizu Metal, the LeTV 1S or the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 the Elephone Vowney doesn’t get a good result. The sensor can be used, but be prepared to sometimes need several attempts. The Elephone Vowney is a Dual-SIM smartphone.

It supports two micro-SIM cards, which both provide LTE reception. The reception is on average, but we’ve never had any problems.

The voice quality is okay. During a call, both participants in the conversation were transmitted with a good voice quality. A noise-cancelling microphone erases any interference.

The hands-free function works perfectly. The Elephone Vowney Lite’s internal speaker can’t keep up with its competitors’. It is able to produce a loud, mostly distortion-free sound, but it is quite undifferentiated and there is absolutely no bass. The Vowney is suitable for occasional watching videos, but you don’t get a mobile jukebox.

With earphones connected to the Vowney Lite, you get a good sound. The used Wi-Fi module with 802.11b/g/n standard has a good reception and throughput.

The Bluetooth 4.0 module is reliable and keeps a stable connection up to 10 metres distance. The Vowney Lite’s GPS can be perfectly used for mobile navigation. On our test track, the Vowney Lite determined the position permanently reliably.

The pedestrian navigation is made easier through the used compass. The Vowney also has NFC. In terms of sensors, the Elephone Vowney is well set-up. It provides proximity, brightness, direction and gyroscope sensors.

The Elephone Vowney Lite has a strong 4000mAh battery. The lasting battery capacity didn’t come at the expense of the weight, which is very light with 156gram. In practice, the battery provides a good performance.

The Vowney Lite can be easily used 5 hours within a day. It gets good results, but, even having the same capacity, it can’t compete with the Redmi Note 3. Still, even frequent-users get enough capacity for one day. People using their phones moderately get two days run-time. The Vowney Lite is fully charged after two and a half hours. Conclusion 82% Super The Elephone Vowney Lite provides many things users were waiting for. It combines a fast Helio X10 processor with full LTE support.

Those who didn’t want to choose the Redmi Note 3 because of insufficient 4G support, now have an alternative. The Elephone Vowney clearly has its weaknesses.

The processing, the display and the speakers are not of the same high quality as the competitors’. However, the Vowney Lite also has its strong points, for example the strong battery and the very good 21 megapixel camera. All in all, it offers a good total package.

To those who search for a fast phone with full LTE support, we can recommend the Elephone Vowney Lite. design and build quality 70 % display 70 % software and performance 80 % connectivity and communication 100 % camera 90 % battery 80 %
