About Honor 8 Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has launched its latest flagship smartphone in India. Called Honor 8 and priced at Rs 29,990, the smartphone is a step up from last year’s Honor 7. The trend of having dual camera setup at the back is catching up, and the Honor 8 aims to deliver the same to the mid-range segment. While the Huawei P9 offers a Leica developed dual rear cameras, the Honor 8 offers a similar setup – minus Leica branding. Dual camera is not exactly a new concept.

HTC tried the technology first with One M8 that used two cameras – one to capture photos, and other to add DSLR-like bokeh effects. The same technology has also been used by Xiaomi on its Redmi Pro smartphone.

There is also LG G5 that uses dual camera setup – a standard lens and a wide angle lens. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus also has two 12-megapixel sensors -- one 28mm wide-angle and another 56mm telephoto. In case of the Honor 8, you have two cameras but a different functionality altogether. You have one color (RGB) sensor and the other monochrome sensor.

Together both cameras can capture crisper and detailed photos, Huawei says. Honor has also worked on the design aspect to add a touch of premium look and feel to it. The frame is made from sturdy metal, whereas the front and back of the smartphone is made from 2.5D curved glass. The power / sleep button and volume rocker is placed on the right edge, whereas the card slot is on the left edge. The USB Type-C port, 3.5mm audio port and speaker grill is at the bottom.

Honor 8 specifications It flaunts a 5.2-inch full HD (1080p) display covered with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top. Huawei has used its homebrew Kirin 950 octa-core processor (16nm architecture), paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB onboard storage. There is also a microSD card slot for expandable storage up to 128GB.

In the photography department, you get two 12-megapixel camera sensors at the back, with aperture of f/2.2 and pixel size of 1.76-micron. Out of the two sensors, one is an RGB color sensor allowing you to capture rich colors; whereas the other is a monochrome sensor which helps in capturing more light with increased sharpness, Huawei says. Both cameras work together to deliver detailed and crisper photos. The camera also features hybrid auto-focus and laser autofocus, along with dual tone LED flash.

Honor has also added camera modes such as a professional mode giving you full manual control to adjust the shutter speed, exposure compensation and white light balance and more. There is also wide aperture mode that enables you to blur background by add DSLR-like blur effects, and refocus on the subject / background after the photo is captured. There is also a light painting mode where you can play around with the shutter speed to capture light trails and more. The Honor 8 also features an 8-megapixel selfie camera of aperture f/2.4 with low-light mode, beauty mode and screen flash mode where the display lights up bright to capture clearer pictures in low light.

Armed with a 3,000mAh battery and support for fast charging technology (9V/2A), you can quickly charge the smartphone from 0-47 percent in 30 minutes. In terms of connectivity, you get 4G LTE with VoLTE support, NFC for tap and share, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth. Honor has used the latest USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer.

On the software front, the Honor 8 boots Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow wrapped under EMUI 4.1. For biometric authentication, the smartphone also includes a fingerprint scanner placed at the back. What’s more, there is also a built-in IR sensor allowing you to control your music player, projector, set-top-box, TV set and air conditioner right from your smartphone. The Honor 8 will compete with the likes of Lenovo Z2 Plus, Le Eco Le Max2 and Xiaomi Mi 5 all of which are priced under Rs 23,000. All the competitor smartphones are powered by Qualcomm’s snapdragon 820 quad-core processor paired with 3GB of RAM (4GB on Le Max2) and 32GB of onboard storage.

The Z2 Plus is also offered 4GB of RAM + 64GB storage, whereas the Max2 is also offered in 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage variant too. All smartphones run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.
